The UK labour market is experiencing a long-term trend towards a strong rise in part-time work, with the creation of part-time jobs outstripping the creation of full-time jobs.  This argues some commentators, is having an impact on workplace intellegence.

I have recently come across two articles, one takes a traditional look at learning from experience and the other look at how the work place may become dumber!

In a short promotional article for the Guardian Small Business Network James Caan shares his experiences with getting it wrong (there are reminders for all business leaders too) !  My favourtiet is ‘one year we miscalculated our PAYE, the the Inland Revenue informed us that we owed them money. I turned to the accountants and told them that they must have got the accounts wrong. They retorted: “We produce the accounts, you are responsible for checking them and signing them off.” Smart answer.

In the second article, XpertHR suggests that UK employment market data indicates that organisations are at risk of losing vital knowledge and expertise through the rise of a contingent workforce (temporary staff or interims):

  • ‘the traditional employee could become an endangered species in the years to come.”
  • Will our organizations get dumber?”
